Monarchs lay eggs on milkweeds and dogbane. They take nectar from Echinacea, dyers’ chamomile, golden rod, aster and other fall flowers especially. Strong flyers, Monarchs are known to migrate over 3800 kilometres. Most abundant in late summer they are found in Canada between mid May and late October. The butterfly you see here hatched in my garden at St. Jean-Port Joli, Québec in 1995. That was the last year Monarchs were seen it that area, probably because of clearcutting in Mexico.
